Academies of Hampton Director appointed to the National Career Academy Coalition Board of Directors

Congratulations to Veronica Hurd, director of the Academies of Hampton (AoH), for her appointment to the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) Board of Directors.

As the director of the Academies of Hampton, Hurd has been instrumental in facilitating the work and assisting the division with Hampton City Schools 16 college- and career-themed academies and 41 career pathways, which is quickly becoming a model for career academies across the country. Hurd’s appointment to the Board of Directors is reflective of our passion and commitment as well as expertise for advocating for college, career and life ready 21st century learners.  

As the recognized leader for collaborative support and sustainability of career academies, NCAC’s mission is to create and support a national network of existing and emerging career academies. Since its inception in 1996, NCAC has led the effort to create learning environments that give students a network of support from teachers, mentors, and business people who help students set long term goals and stay on a clear path. In 2004, NCAC introduced the National Standards of Practice for career academies, which fosters the understanding that career academies not only impact academic achievement, but also support economic and workforce development. 

Hampton City Schools and the community is committed to providing students more of the advanced skills they need to be productive, engaged, and successful citizens in college, career, and life. The Academies of Hampton enables students to learn through the lens of a career or academic theme in a relevant, hands-on learning environment with real-world application and experiences.
