Forrest Elementary School holds Eating Pi with Lola event

To kick off the Hampton Reads One Book initiative, Forrest Elementary School held an Eating Pi with Lola event on Saturday, March 13.

Eating Pi with Lola was a pop-up event held at two apartment complexes for students who attend Forrest. Teachers, assistant principal, volunteers, and community partners from New Covenant Church, Universal Mental Health Services, and Anthem Healthkeepers Plus were on site to provide pizza and distribute books, math and literacy activities, and leis. The event was created to promote Read Across America Month and Hampton Reads One Book – Lola Levine is Not Mean.

New Covenant Church provided the pizza and beverages for the fun activity. Universal Mental Health Services donated four $25 Papa John’s gift cards. Anthem Healthkeepers Plus contributed four family buckets that included a board game and snacks for a family night. These donations were given to four lucky families who attended the event.

“Even in the midst of the pandemic, we wanted our families to know that we are here for them. Family engagement is the building block of climate, culture, and ensuring equity," said Val Wolfe, Forrest family engagement specialist.

One of the parents wrote, “More, please don't stop. We truly need these events." Another parent shared, "This was fantastic! My girls had so much fun and loved the new books and take-home bags!”
