HCS holds district science fair; Briaonna Tindall of Eaton Fundamental Middle School places first

 

Hampton City Schools held what it plans to be an annual science fair. Seventh and eighth grade students from Eaton Fundamental Middle School, Syms Middle School, and Ann H. Kilgore Gifted Center chose to participate. The event was held at the Ruppert Sargent Building on March 30, 2022, for students who placed first, second, third, or received an honorable mention at their school’s science fair.

 

Upon the decision of the judges – Amber Brown, HCS director of secondary schools; Dr. Angela Byrd-Wright, HCS curriculum leader for mathematics; Dr. John Caggiano, HCS deputy superintendent; and Dr. Kate Maxlow, HCS director of innovation and professional learning – first, second, third place, and honorable mention awards were given.

 

First Place – Briaonna Tindall of Eaton Fundamental Middle School. Her project was called The Effect of Markers on a White Shirt.

 

Second Place – Christopher Goodwin of Eaton Fundamental Middle School. His project was called The Effect of Different Solutions on the Cleanliness of a Penny.

 

Third Place – Rebecca White of Ann H. Kilgore Gifted Center. Her project was called Methods of Dehydrating Strawberries.

 

Honorable Mention – Alejandro Parafenuk of Syms Middle School. Her project was Newton’s Cradle.

 

The winners were selected on the following criteria: title, purpose, hypothesis, materials,

procedures, experimental design: procedures, independent variable, dependent variable, constants, controls, cata (5 per I.V.) graph - x-axis (I.V.) y-axis (D.V.), results, and conclusion.

 

Upon being named the first place winner, Briaonna said, “I am overly excited to have received first place. It is a great honor and I did not expect to win. I am just excited for everyone who participated today.”
