Gary Skeen receives 2021-2022 Outstanding Master’s Student Award for Old Dominion University educational leadership program

Congratulations to Gary Skeen, virtual partnership specialist and family support specialist for the new HCS FLEx program. He is the recipient of the 2021-2022 Outstanding Master’s Student Award for the Old Dominion University educational leadership program.

The Outstanding Master's Student Award is voted on by the faculty of the educational leadership department of Old Dominion University each year for students in the program that graduate in the summer, fall, or spring semesters. These distinguished awards are bestowed as recognition of outstanding achievement across the disciplines in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies, which is home to five distinct disciplines.

Skeen is in his 12th year as an educator. Prior to coming to Hampton, he held the position of director of bands across parts of Southwestern Virginia and Virginia Beach. His bands received numerous awards over the years, including Virginia Honor Band honors at Virginia High School in Bristol, VA as well as Blue Ribbon School of Music awards at both Virginia High and Plaza Middle School in Virginia Beach. He is an active adjudicator in music throughout Virginia and North Carolina, and is currently pursuing a PhD in educational leadership from Old Dominion University. This is Skeen's first year with Hampton City Schools.
