Phoebus High School Robotics Team receives $3,000 grant

The Phoebus High School Robotics Team has been awarded a $3,000 grant by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) to help the team register for and attend the FIRST Robotics Competitions that the team participates in every March.

“This grant reduces the team’s out-of-pocket registration costs and makes it easier for the team to attend multiple events across the Chesapeake District and beyond,” said Michael Evans, Phoebus teacher and robotics coach.

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology, FIRST Robotics Competition is called the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It is as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.

DoDEA, as one of only two federally-operated school systems, is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and managing prekindergarten through grade 12 educational programs on behalf of the Department of Defense (DoD). DoDEA is globally positioned, operating 160 accredited schools in eight districts located in 11 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
