Phoebus High School football team earns Class 4 state championship title

The Phoebus High School varsity football team, under the direction of head coach Jeremy Blunt, defeated Salem High School to clinch the Class 4 state football championship on Saturday, December 9, 2023. The game was held at Liberty University and the final score was 21-14.

The highlight of the game was when freshman quarterback #15 Maurikus Banks passed to senior wide receiver #2 Keyontae Gray for a 86 yard touchdown with one second remaining to give the Phantoms a 21-14 win over Salem.

Blunt shared, “What a season, these young men played through the pressures of pursuing a 3 peat. They embraced the challenge, demonstrated character, and persevered throughout the season to finally achieve their goal. What a day to be a Phantom.”

This is the school’s third consecutive state title and their 35th straight win. It is their second back-to-back season with a 15-0 record and their 10th state title in the last 22 years. In addition, Phoebus is the first school to win state titles in three different classes – seven titles in Class 5, two titles in Class 3 and one in Class 4.

“This team joins the rich tradition of Phoebus High School football teams as state champions,” shared Phoebus executive principal David Coccoli. “The players and coaches have embodied Phoebus High School's purpose of greatness every day, in every way! The Phoebus administration, faculty, and community are extremely proud and would like to congratulate each of these young men and coaches.”

Congratulations to the Phoebus High School football team and the entire PHS family!
