Art teacher Mona Cunnikin helps to create black history quilt

Mona Cunnikin, art teacher at Bassette Elementary School, recently used her talents to help create a black history quilt for Northampton County.

Cunnikin said that a board member of the Northampton County Cultural Arts Center approached her with the idea of creating a black history quilt. She shared that all of the paintings from the quilt are individuals or places in Northampton County that represent the first black historians in their county.

“In collaboration with Brenda Taylor (historian), Jenette Workman (expert quilter), and myself (artist) we brought history to life,” said Cunnikin. “I am honored to be a part of making black history come alive.”
