Dr. Janice Richison, HCS science curriculum leader, receives the Citizens Hampton Unity for Social Impact Award

Dr. Janice Richison, curriculum leader for science for Hampton City Schools (HCS), received the Citizens of Hampton Unity for Social Impact Award at the city of Hampton’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’s annual award ceremony on Friday, February 2, 2024. Richison is one of seven to receive an award out of 51 nominations.


This award highlighted the impact Richison has made on the community of Hampton over the years in the area of science by collaborating with community partners, such as, Quality Education for Minorities; James River Association; Virginia Air and Space Science Museum; Fort Monroe; NASA Langley Research Center; Hampton University-HU Cryogenics Lab; Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel; Hampton University Cancer Research and Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute; the College of William and Mary - Dr. Geise; Virginia Tech Virginia Seafood Research Center; Matties Farm; Bryant and Stratton College; Jefferson Lab; Young Eagles; Virginia Aquarium; Virginia Living Museum; Virginia Mariners Museum; Tuskegee Airmen Chapter Drone Program; Hampton Chapter Gamma Upsilon Omega; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.; STEAM-Hampton Chapter Links, Inc.; 7-11; Chick-fil-A; and Shored Up Oysters, to bring science to the students of Hampton City Schools.


“The field of science is vast and amazing,” shared Richison. “I am always so proud to see the accomplishments of our students in the fields of science. Hampton City Schools is a force to be reckoned with, because our students are realizing the impact on society that they can have by embracing science for their future.”


Dr. James Harris, HCS chief academic officer, said, “We are extremely proud of Dr. Richison for receiving the Unity Award. Her years of experience and dedication to the field of science are noteworthy. Dr. Richison has a passion for ensuring that all students are exposed to STEM education and works with many community partners to ensure that students are college, career, and life-ready.”
