KHS grad Jerod Mayo named head coach of the New England Patriots

Jerod Mayo, a Hampton native and 2004 graduate of Kecoughtan High School (KHS), was named the head coach of the New England Patriots. He is the youngest head coach in the league.

During his time at KHS, Mayo was on the First Team All District 2002 and 2003; the Daily Press Player of the Year 2003; First Team All Region 2002 and 2003; Second Team All State 2002; First Team All State 2003; and All American 2003.

Mayo attended the University of Tennessee where he played football after high school. He was selected by the Patriots 10th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year, earned Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors in 2010 after leading the league in tackles, and received a second Pro Bowl selection in 2012. He was a part of New England’s Super Bowl title team in 2014. He became an assistant coach with the Patriots in 2019.

Tommy Austin, Mayo’s coach at Kecoughtan said, “I believe that Jerod has always been a coach on the field, even in high school. He was a great teammate in high school, and the kind of leader he is, in my opinion, is what will make him a good coach. He was always down-to-earth, never cared about getting his name in the paper or getting accolades.”
