Tanya Howard of Bethel High School earns doctorate


Dr. Tanya Howard, academy principal at Bethel High School, has successfully defended her dissertation at The George Washington University. Howard’s dissertation is Perceptions of Elementary Principals’ Instructional Leadership Support of English Learners Academic Achievement in School Divisions in Virginia. Her doctorate is an EdD in educational leadership and policy.


Howard has been an academy principal at Bethel for the past five years. She was a graduation specialist at Hampton High School for three years and served as a college and career coach at Hampton for one year. Howard was a business teacher in Hampton for seven years at Kecoughtan High School, Hampton High School, Phoebus High School, and Bridgeport Academy. She will serve as the executive principal of Bethel High School for the 2023-2024 school year.


Howard holds a bachelor of science in business management from Hampton University, a master’s in business administration from Strayer University, and an education specialist degree in educational leadership and administration from The George Washington University.


“Dr. Howard has worked at all four high schools and her dedication to the young people she serves is a model for leaders everywhere,” said Dr. Raymond Haynes, chief of secondary school leadership.


“We are very proud of Dr. Tanya V. Howard on earning her doctoral degree,” said Bethel High School executive principal Ralph Saunders. “She has worked hard and deserves to earn this remarkable achievement. Dr. Howard is an inspiration for all at Bethel High School!  Congratulations!”
