HCS music education program receives national recognition for 10th year

Hampton City Schools has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. This is the 10th year that the division has been recognized (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023) for this award due to the outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and their support for music education as part of a well-rounded education for all children.

Now in its 24th year, the 2023 Best Communities for Music Education program has recognized 738 school districts and 80 schools across 44 states.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, HCS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instructional time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Kelly Dee, visual and performing arts curriculum leader shared,“This is the 10th year our school system has earned the designation. The 10-year mark is a credit to the students, families, music educators, supportive administrators, and community. Music is an art form that has the ability to bring people together, create a sense of community, and inspire us to be better human beings. Music education is not a luxury but a necessity. Here are just a few reasons why: First and foremost, music education is crucial for the development of young minds. It has been shown to improve cognitive function, enhance memory and concentration, and increase overall academic performance. Children who study music are more likely to excel in subjects such as math and science, and they are also more likely to stay in school and graduate. Secondly, music education teaches important life skills. Learning an instrument or singing in a choir requires discipline, dedication, and teamwork. It teaches children the value of hard work, practice, and perseverance. These are qualities that are essential for success in any area of life. Thirdly, music education is vital for cultural enrichment. It exposes children to different styles of music from around the world, helping to foster an appreciation and understanding of diverse cultures. It also provides a platform for creative expression, allowing children to express themselves in a way that words often cannot. Finally, music education has a positive impact on mental health. It has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and it provides an outlet for emotional expression. In a world where mental health is becoming an increasingly important issue, music education can play a valuable role in promoting emotional well-being. The benefits of music education are clear.
