Three Hampton high schools named to the 2022-2023 Winter VHSL Sportsmanship Honor Roll

Bethel High School, Hampton High School, and Phoebus High School are among the 231 schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia that are being recognized by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for the winter VHSL Sportsmanship Honor Roll. To earn this recognition, a school may not have a player or coach ejected, or programs placed on warning status for the 2022-2023 winter season.

Teaching and holding student-athletes responsible for positive sportsmanship helps to prepare them for graduation and life. The Portrait of a Hampton Graduate teaches this by emphasizing the student:

  • demonstrates mindfulness of self, others, and personal journey
  • builds, connects, and works with individuals and diverse communities

“Our student athletes in Hampton City Schools continue to demonstrate excellence on and off the field,” shared Beth Mair, HCS athletics coordinator. “Congratulations to our schools receiving the VHSL winter sportsmanship award.”

Sportsmanship is defined by Merriam-Webster as “conduct (such as fairness, respect for one’s opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport.” VHSL activities are an extension of the classroom and teaching sportsmanship is clearly an essential part of the education process.

“We are extremely proud of all the players, coaches, administrators, and fans who worked very hard to make this happen,” said VHSL executive director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun, Ed.D. “Each school and community should be proud to be on this honor roll. We feel it’s the VHSL’s highest honor. Sportsmanship reflects positively on the individuals, schools, and communities.”

Haun further added, “VHSL activities are an extension of the classroom, and teaching sportsmanship is essential to the education process. In addition, sportsmanship is one of the greatest skills we can instill in our student-athletes. Let’s celebrate this winter’s VHSL Sportsmanship Honor Roll and say thank you to the student-athletes, school staff, and community members of these schools recognized during the winter season and challenge all our member schools to be on the spring honor roll.”

We thank the student-athletes, coaches, school staff, and community members of Bethel, Hampton, and Phoebus who are being recognized during the winter season.
