HCS begins Elementary Arts and Literacy Program

The Elementary Arts and Literacy Program has started in three of our elementary schools - Phenix PreK-8 School, Langley Elementary, and Forrest Elementary. The program combines literacy with art, music, theater, and movement exploration. Lesson activities are provided for all grade levels. Additional schools are projected to start the program in the second semester of this school year or next summer.

"We have worked closely with the language arts department and teachers to develop a fun and engaging program where students learn a variety of ways that they can apply their reading and writing skills,” Kelly Dee, visual and performing arts curriculum leader.

As part of the HCS Elementary Arts and Literacy Program, twenty piano keyboards have been provided to all elementary schools. Currently, the keyboards are part of the lesson activities inside the program. Long term, the keyboards will be used in music classes, clubs, and after-school programs. Dee shares, "Playing the piano connects students to the world of music and has shown benefits to learning math and language arts. Also, it's a lot of fun!"
