School Board members and clerk recognized for professional development

The School Board members and clerk were recognized at the October 4, 2023, School Board meeting for their participation in the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) for earning academy awards for participation in VSBA’s professional development opportunities.

Each year the Virginia School Boards Association recognizes board members, school board clerks, and superintendents for their dedication, time and hard work in improving boardmanship skills through VSBA meetings, conferences, board development and training, and active involvement in the association. VSBA members earn credits for VSBA Academy Awards which are based on participation from July 1 to June 30 each year. There are five levels of awards, with certificates and pins awarded for particular levels. The VSBA Awards are presented annually to those individuals who meet the requirements. Superintendent Dr. Raymond Haynes presented the awards as follows:

The Award of Recognition is given to members who earn 15 credits in a year. School Board members Vice Chair Dr. Tina Banks-Gray, Stephanie Jackson Afonja, Dr. Reginald Woodhouse, and clerk Carolyn Bowers received this certificate of recognition.

The Award of Excellence is for those members who earn 48 credits in two years. Ann Cherry, Chair Dr. Richard Mason, and Jason Samuels received this certificate of recognition and a silver pin.

The Award of Distinction (the highest level) goes to members who have earned 84 credits in two years. Joseph Kilgore received this recognition with a starfish pin and a certificate.

Congratulations to our Board members and clerk for earning these VSBA Academy Awards.
