Hampton City Schools celebrates 24th annual Lights On Afterschool event

On Thursday, October 26, 2023, Hampton City Schools will join one million Americans to come together to highlight Lights On Afterschool events throughout the nation to celebrate afterschool programs and the important role they play in the lives of children, families, and our communities. This nationwide date has become a hallmark for the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year. In addition, community landmarks/monuments throughout the nation, such as the Empire State Building, will “light up” that evening in support of afterschool programs. The city of Hampton joins the effort and will light up City Hall, the Hampton Roads Convention Center, and the Virginia Air and Space Science Center in blue and yellow to support HCS and their afterschool programs.

Launched by Afterschool Alliance in October of 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating the importance of afterschool programming. Hampton City Schools has 15 school sites participating – Bryan Elementary, Forrest Elementary, Lindsay Middle, Peake Elementary, Syms Middle, Tarrant Middle, Armstrong School for the Arts, Asbury Elementary, Cooper Elementary Magnet, Jackson Elementary, Kraft Elementary, Machen Elementary, Phenix PreK-8, Phillips Elementary, and Smith Elementary. Each school has invited their families and community members to participate in a variety of afterschool activities spotlighting the importance of afterschool programs.
