School Board representative works with Hampton Youth Commission to spread information on grants

 

Muhammad Al Saffar, vice president of the Hampton Youth Commission (HYC) and student representative to the Hampton School Board, is helping to spread the word about microgrants being awarded up to $2,500 from the HYC.

 

Al Saffar announced at the September 15 School Board meeting that applications for the grants will be accepted through October 29, 2021. In addition, the HYC will host a meeting on October 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Veterans Conference Room of the Ruppert Sargent Building, 1 Franklin Street for those interested in applying.

Who can apply?

Youth-led programs are opportunities created by individuals and organizations where youth lead planning, decision-making, facilitation, reflection and evaluation on issues that matter to them using actions that are youth led. Adults can act in supportive ways through youth-adult partnerships. 

Youth led organizations must: 

  • Have youth ranging from ages 10-18
  • Have three or more members
  • Be majority youth members
  • Be a 501c(3) organization
  • Have youth engaged in primary leadership of the organization and must be involved in the decision making, implementation and evaluation process of the organization
  • Have an adult sponsor

The Hampton Youth Commission continues a 20-year legacy of youth civic engagement and leadership development in Hampton city government.

Commissioners, appointed by City Council, are able to affect city policy in the areas of youth leadership, civic preparedness, youth activities, and encouraging our young adult community.
