Experience STEM and STEM Careers

 

Hampton City Schools is partnering with the Coastal Virginia STEM Hub, the National Institute of Aerospace, the City of Newport News, Brooks Crossing Innovation & Opportunity Center, Virtual Science Teachers, and Old Dominion University to provide a FREE and EXCITING day filled with hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) at the 3rd Annual STEM Exploration Community Event on October 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brooks Crossing Innovation and Opportunity Center (550 30th Street, Newport News).  Hampton City School families are encouraged to attend this event and are asked to wear their school shirts!


The event is for learners of all ages from the Tidewater area of Virginia. Interact with STEM organizations and participate in hands-on experiences with over 45+ exhibitors such as NASA, Newport News Police Forensics, the National Institute of Aerospace, the CHKD ambulance, and Nauticus. Learn more about how to safely view the annular eclipse happening that day from NASA eClips. Fly drones with Denbigh Aviation Academy. Step into the Newport News Shipbuilding TO GO MX trailer to discover cutting-edge technology. Explore the TIES STEM-on-the-Go van, a digital fabrication and machining wonder on wheels. Dive into the world of engineering and technology inside the GO TEC van. Hampton City Schools will have four Academies exhibiting, including Kecoughtan High School’s Governor’s STEM Academy of Architecture, Environment and Engineering and the Academy of Teaching, Education, and Learning.  Hampton High School’s Academy of Technology and Engineering and Bethel High School’s Transportation, Analytics, Information, and Logistics will also be among the amazing exhibitors!  (To see the complete list of exhibitors, go to the event website.). Don't miss the chance to hear from STEM innovators like Julie Williams-Byrd (Acting Deputy Director of Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate and Center Chief Technologist at NASA’s Langley Research Center), Michelle Ferebee (Deputy Director of the Office of Strategic Analysis, Communications, and Business Development at NASA’s Langley Research Center), Jamal Davis (HCS graduate), and Suzanne Sprague (entrepreneur and CEO of Virtual Science Teachers).  See the complete list of speakers here.


Families should preregister for the event here. The first 500 to preregister and attend will receive solar eclipse glasses and a Coastal Virginia STEM Hub backpack (must arrive prior to 11 a.m.).  Minors must be accompanied by an adult. 


The event will be under tents and will be held rain or shine!  Food trucks will be on site.
