Jennifer Thomason earns doctorate

Congratulations to Jennifer Thomason, a digital learning specialist with the department of innovation and professional learning, for earning her doctorate. Thomason successfully defended her dissertation, Micropolitical Influences on Teacher Leader Selection & Enactment through Old Dominion University.

Thomason who was born and raised in Hampton and currently resides in Smithfield completed her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in elementary education at Old Dominion University. She earned her educational specialist degree in educational leadership from Virginia Polytechnic University in 2018.

Thomason began her teaching career with Hampton City Schools in 2010 at Cesar Tarrant Elementary School teaching fifth grade and then moved to Jane H. Bryan Elementary where she just completed her 10th year teaching before transferring to the innovation and professional learning team as a digital learning specialist in 2020. She has written curriculum and common assessments for the district and has led several professional developments as well as presented at the local, state, and national level. She said she loves helping students unlock their potential and be successful both in the classroom and out. In addition, she loves collaborating with administrators and teachers to brainstorm new and innovative ideas to utilize in the classroom. She has a passion for science, curriculum, and ensuring equity for all students.

“I have worked with Jennifer Thomason for several years, first as a curriculum writer and now as a digital learning specialist,” said Dr. Kate Maxlow, director of innovation and professional learning for Hampton City Schools. “I have never seen her give less than 100% to everything she does. Her creativity, passion for education, and love for HCS continue to be inspiring. Her dissertation provides critical information about the role of teacher leaders in schools today, and will no doubt inform future studies on this important topic.”
