Phoebus High School awarded $2,500 microgrant from Chick-fil-A Leader Academy

Phoebus High School (PHS) students in the Academy of Culinary Arts and Tourism under the direction of culinary instructor Wade O’Neill, have been awarded a $2,500 microgrant from the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. They were selected from entries from over 1,000 schools in 40 states.
The grant will be used to help fund the project, Eliminate waste and feed our community: Turning our food desert into an oasis one day at a time. The goal of the project is to eliminate waste from local grocery stores; help distribute food to sustain neighborhoods in the Phoebus community; and educate the community about making simple, delicious meals in 30 to 40 minutes to feed a family of four for under $10.
Funds from the grant will be used to purchase the following:

  • Marketing materials for making the production available to the community and distributing recipes throughout food banks and grocery stores
  • Equipment for use in test-kitchen including pots and pans, basic kitchen tools, cutting boards, etc.
  • Food materials for stocking pantries in the test kitchen and as models for the community
  • Urban agricultural materials and equipment for use in the school’s greenhouse program including seeds and seed starting equipment, potting materials for starting and distributing seedlings, etc.

“I want to congratulate and thank our students along with the teachers that supported them with this grant proposal,” said David Coccoli, PHS Academy of Hospitality and Tourism principal. “The hard work that went into this proposal and the work they are continuously doing will impact our community for many years to come.”
