Students pay tribute to Beverly Cleary through essays

With the passing of author Beverly Cleary, language arts teacher Melissa Still at Jones Magnet Middle School decided to offer her students an extra credit opportunity to honor Ms. Cleary. Still’s class was tasked to write a short essay stemming from a question Beverly Cleary had as a young child, “Where are the books about kids like us?”

“Several of my students were shocked to discover that Cleary was 104 years old when she passed away,” said Still.

A number of students chose to participate in the activity, but one piece from eighth grader Saniah Murray stood out to Still because of how passionately she connected with the stories in her elementary school years.

Saniah’s essay reads as follows:

Where are the books about kids like us? This question is one Mrs. Cleary had as a child. I believe that Mrs. Cleary wrote her books because she didn't want to fit into a square box. She wanted to be something more than normal. Mrs. Cleary, your accomplishments are not unnoticed!

As a child I enjoyed reading Ramona and Beezus. They were very good books because Ramona reminded me of myself. Determined, clumsy and outgoing. Although Ramona reminded me of myself, I always loved Beezus way more! Mrs. Clearly, your work impacted many children around the world! I even loved the movie Romona and Beezus on Disney! Most authors can't even get the potential to make five best-selling books, and you made 40. What an accomplishment!

In regards to your family, I'm sorry for their loss because they lost an amazing thinker, author, and family member. You were the whole package deal Mrs. Cleary! I hope you are resting peacefully wherever your soul may be. I wish nothing but peace for your family.
