Hampton Opportunity Initiative donates 2,000 books to students

The Hampton Opportunity Initiative (HOI) recently provided funds to Aberdeen Elementary School, Burbank Elementary School, and Smith Elementary School to purchase approximately 2,000 books for students.

The HOI, in a three-year partnership with the three schools and the HCS English language arts department, has built a long standing relationship with the principals at the three schools. Students were very excited to pick out their book to build their home library.

“Handing out books has to be one of my favorite things to do,” says Melissa Wilson, reading specialist at Smith. “Thanks to the generosity of the Hampton Opportunity Initiative, our students at Smith are each receiving a book for their summer reading. The students were excited and thankful to choose their books, and we could see their smiles shining through. We appreciate this generous donation for our Smith Sharks!”

Chuck Macri, senior associate pastor of Discipleship/Freedom Life Church & HOI board secretary shares, “We at the Hampton Opportunities Initiative (HOI) consider it a privilege to work with HCS in their efforts to improve students’ reading skills. Reading is the foundation for all of learning, so it is critically important to get books in the hands of the students. We believe the summer book distribution program that HCS has been doing is key to students’ ability to 'hit the ground running' when the new school year begins in September. We realize that school budgets are stretched thin, so HOI remains committed to the task of raising funds and purchasing books to hopefully not only help meet the shortfall but to exceed it.”

Hampton City Schools thanks HOI for their donation and ensuring students have the materials they need to keep reading over the summer.
