Hampton City Schools Behind-the-Wheel classes open for registration


Hampton City Schools will hold Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) training classes beginning September 26, 2022. Please read carefully as there is a lot of important information below.


Requirements to take BTW:


  1. The student must have taken and passed the classroom portion of driver’s education. A copy of the student’s green card must be sent to the driver’s education office with a copy of the student’s learner’s permit and registration form. If the student has misplaced the green card, he/she can request a replacement by visiting the following webpage: https://www.hampton.k12.va.us/departments/btw/btwheel.html

  2. The student must have a valid and current Virginia learner’s permit. A copy of the permit must be submitted to the office with the registration form and a copy of the green card.

  3. If the student is under the age of 18, he/she must submit their 45-hour Parent Teen Driving Log, signed by the parent or guardian, to the instructor. The driving log will be collected during the BTW session.
  4. Registrations along with a copy of the student’s learner’s permit, and a copy of the green card may be emailed to ajones12@hampton.k12.va.us; mailed via U.S. mail to the HCS Driver’s Education Department/Andi Jones, One Franklin Street, Suite 546, Hampton, VA 23669; or delivered in person to the second floor receptionist. Only completed forms will be processed to secure a spot in a session.
  5. Students must have transportation to and from the BTW class. The class is located at Phoebus High School (100 Ireland Street). Classes will take place on the driving range.

Information about Hampton City Schools BTW:


  1. There is no cost for our students this school year for BTW.

  2. Sessions will fill up fast. We only take four students per session. After the sessions fill up, we will have a wait list of only 20 students.

  3. Students will receive a written communication through the U.S. mail confirming their session number and time.

  4. Students will drive with an instructor two hours per day, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The session will last for seven days. Students will not drive on Fridays and weekends.

  5. Students will be held to the same policies and regulations as in the Student’s Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.

  6. The Hampton City Schools Health Mitigation Plan will be followed.
  7. The vehicle will be disinfected at the beginning of each session.
  8. On the seventh day of BTW, the student will be given their driving skills test. If the student passes the test, he/she will be given the following: 180-day provisional license, instructions on how to understand the 180-day provisional license, an insurance form for a discount for completing BTW, and a letter from the instructor with skills the student should continue to work on.

  9. If the student does not pass their skills test, he/she will be called by the instructor when there is an opening in the schedule to retest.

All sessions will be held 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Phoebus High School driving range, 100 Ireland Street.
