Langley Elementary School

Langley Elementary School is named for Samuel Pierpont Langley. Mr. Langley was an aviator and physicist who was a pioneer in the development of the airplane. The school was built in 1942 by the federal government to serve the families of the N.A.C.A., now known as N.A.S.A. Mr. Langley's accomplishments were honored in many ways; the first aircraft carrier was named after him and Langley Air Force Base also bears his name. Samuel P. Langley served as a professor of physics and astronomy and was the Secretary of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. He died in 1906.
